Abstract

Compositions suitable for the topical treatment of acne comprise, as vasodilator, one or more of the esters of nicotinic acid and the aliphatic amine salts of salicylic acid and, as a keratoplastic or keratolytic agent, salicylic acid, resorcinol, resorcinol monoacetate or sulphur. The compositions may also contain an anti-infective agent. Specified nicotinic esters are the C1-C8 alkyl esters, tetrahydrofurfuryl nicotinate, benzyl nicotinate, 2-butoxyethyl nicotinate, guaiacyl nicotinate, phenylethyl nicotinate and ethylene glycol nicotinate. Specified salicylate salts are the monoalkylamine and dialkylamine salicylates in which the alkyl groups contain between 1 and 6 carbon atoms each. Anti-infective agents specified are bithionol, hexachlorophene, trichlorophenol, tribromsalicylanilides and benzalkonium chloride. The compositions may take the form of ointments, lotions, suspensions, powders and hydro-alcoholic liquid preparations.
