A cutting machine is provided with means for facilitating the removal or fitting of cutters or spacers on a cutting roller spindle 11, such means comprising two or more supports parallel to the axis of the roller and adapted to support the cutters and spacers when they are withdrawn from the spindle or when the spindle is withdrawn from them. The machine described is for longitudinally cutting a continuous length of material 15 between cutters 12 and disc blades 10 on the spindle 11 before being wound on a roll 5, the pivoted rolls 13, 14 forming part of a roll throw-out device. When it becomes necessary to replace a cutter or change its position along the spindle the cutters 12 are swung clear, the retaining nut 28 holding the cutter assembly and intermediate bushes on the spindle 11 undone, and the support which is formed of Y-section, raised by either mechanical or hydraulic means 19, 20 and locked in position at the periphery of the cutter assembly; the spindle can then be withdrawn from the cutter assembly along a track 25 by a leadscrew or chain driven by a motor 27, a roller 30 serving as a guide for the spindle. Instead of employing a Y-shaped support, two or more rods may be inserted through holes provided in the side frames 1. An alternative arrangement is to have an end bearing removable so that the cutters can be pushed off the spindle on to supports which can either be fixed or removably mounted on the outside of a side frame.
