This invention relates to the trimming orotherwise cutting of sheet material to width and is especially useful in trimming sheet packing or flooring of vulcanized sheet rubber material as well as other sheet materials of plastics, compositions, textile fabrics or the like, to provide strips of uniform width.

The overhang of the pulleys permits adjustment of the roll face close to the lines of cut to support the material close to the cut.
The roll 21 is covered with rubber or other material as at 68 to support the sheet material to be cut and permits setting of the knives so as to out entirely through the material, the covering of the roll protecting the knives from being dulled by contact with the metal roll. 7
The sheet material is delivered to the cutting mechanism from a supply thereof and under a guide roll 66 supported from frame members Ii, i2 by brackets 61. After passing between rolls 21, 28 where the material is trimmed to width it is rewound on suitable rewinding mechanism (not shown).
The invention provides for supporting the trimming knives rigidly in the desired spaced-apart relation and permits holding and steadying the material between the rolls at both sides of and close to each knife.
Variations may be 'made without departing from the scope of the invention as it is defined by the following claims.
I claim:
1. Apparatus for cutting sheet material, said apparatus comprising a pair of cooperating pressure rolls, means for driving the rolls, one of said rolls comprising axially spaced-apart roll sections adjustable axially of the roll, at least one of said roll sections comprising a pair of head members and removable staves connecting said head members, cutting knives independently supported between said roll sections for contact with the ppositeroll at positions between the roll sections,
,and supports extending along the rolls at each side thereof for adjustably securing the knives.
2. Apparatus for cutting sheet material, said apparatus comprising a pair of cooperating pressure rolls, means for driving the rolls, one of said rolls comprising axially spaced-apart roll sections adjustable axially of the rolls, said sections having annular ciearanee pockets at their ends for clearing cutters, stationary cutters located in said pockets and supported by bars extending between said roll sections, and means for adjustably supporting said bars.
3. Apparatus for cutting sheet material, said apparatus comprising a pair of cooperating presing cutters, stationary cutters located in said pockets and contacting the opposite roll through a space between said overhanging faces, bars extending between the roll sections for supporting said cutters, and means at each side of the rolls for adjustably supporting the ends of said bars.

Apparatus for cutting sheet material; said apparatus comprising a pair of cooperating pressure rolls, roll-driving means, one of said rolls comprising axially spaced-apart sections, a clear ance pocket between said sections, supports at each side of the rolls, a bar secured to said supports and extending between the roll sections, and a cutting knife supported on said bar between the roll sections within said pocket and extending outwardly of the roll between said roll sections 'toengage material between said rolls.

Apparatus for cutting sheet material; said apparatus comprising a pair of cooperating pressure rolls, roll-driving means, one of said rolls comprisingaxially spaced-apart sections adjust able axially of the roll, said sections having clearance pockets at their ends for clearing cutters, supports at each side of the rolls, bars adjustably secured at opposite ends thereof to said supports and extending between ends of the roll sections, and cutting knives supported on said bars within said clearance pockets and extending outwardly of the roll between said roll sections to engage material between said rolls. i 6. Apparatus for cutting sheet material, sai apparatus comprising a pair of cooperating pressure rolls, means for driving said rolls, one of said rolls comprising axially spaced-apart sec tions adjustable axially of the roll, said sections having roll faces overhanging their opposed ends in closely spaced relation for supporting material close to a cutter, supports for cutters extending parallel to the rolls at each side thereof, a bar adjustably secured at opposite ends thereof to said supports, and extending through the space between said roll sections, and a cutter secured to said bar between said sections interiorly of the overhanging faces and extending outwardly thereof toward the face of the opposite roll.
