Abstract
964,135. Shoots and hoppers. JUDSON L. THOMSON MANUFACTURING CO. Feb. 23, 1962 [Oct. 10, 1961], No. 7124/62. Heading B8S. Rivets fall from hopper 20, Fig. 4, into the interior of a rotating ring 28 formed with slots 60 which are cut thereinto from the interior to the exterior so that a correctly positioned rivet is entrained in a slot and carried round by the ring for discharge into shoot 84. As shown in Fig. 3 the rivet head H is withdrawn from slot 60 by a guide 70 which is positioned so that the rivet is tipped away from ring 28 to avoid the rivet being bruised. The ring is driven by a D.C. motor having a low stalling torque to prevent damage to the rivets in the event of jamming. Level device.-The height of rivets in shoot 84 is monitored by a photocell or spaced electrical contacts which control the driving motor. Normally the rivets falling intermittently past the cell or contacts do not affect the running of the motor. If however the riveting machine is not working and the rivets mount up the light beam will be permanently interrupted or the circuit closed through the column of rivets to cut out the motor. A similar level detector may be incorporated to detect a fall in the level of rivets in the shoot 84 due to the hopper 20 becoming empty. The detector may operate a warning device or stop the machine.
