Abstract

963,919. Electric space heaters. SUNBEAM CORPORATION. April 6, 1962 [June 27, 1961], No. 13372/62. Heading H5H. An electric space heater comprises a reflector assembly 12 located within a housing 11 and formed with end walls 34 having aligned openings 46. A heating element 13 is wound round two insulating supports 39 which are aligned with openings 46 and are each connected to a respective end wall 34 by spring means 44, so that the heating element is tensioned. As shown, a nickel-chromium wire or ribbon 13 is located in grooves in porcelain blocks 39, each of which is secured to a leaf spring 44 with a mica layer 49 and a sheet metal member 48 larger than opening 46 therebetween. The ends of element 13 are secured to terminals 40 passing through the blocks 39, Fig. 7 (not shown). The reflector assembly is secured to a flange 11g surrounding a front opening in casing 11, with a metal grille 17 therebetween. The heater also includes a fan 14 operated by a motor connected in series with the heating element, air being drawn through the back 15 of the casing and passing through slots 16 in the reflector and around insulating supports 39 and through openings 46. A thermally-responsive control switch 20 includes a contact 22b, movable by control knob 23 to a position dependent on the temperature required, and a contact 22a movable by bimetallic element 21 to open the switch when the desired temperature is obtained. The switch is shielded from cold air by a baffle open only towards the front and right-hand side (Fig. 4) of the heater. The heater also includes a safety switch 25 which opens if member 26 is not in contact with the floor or other surface. The upper surface of casing 11 is recessed at 31 to receive control knob 23 and handle 29.
