Apparatus for exploding a number of seriesconnected detonators 2 comprises a source of energy 1 to which the detonators are connected by way of a diode 8 and a gas-filled electronic switch 7, the source of energy 1 being of the kind in which the potential increases gradually from a minimum to a maximum value at a given point in which range a cold cathode gasfilled triode 11 becomes conductive whereupon the potential of a terminal 12 suddenly changes from an initial negative potential 13 to a positive potential, the pulse being transmitted by a condenser 15 to the anode of the switch 7 causing it to conduct to explode the detonators 2. The change of potential at the terminal 12 also causes a diode 19 to fire, after a time interval determined by the resistor-condenser network 16, 18, so that a pulse is applied to the firing electrode of a silicon controlled rectifier 21 which then becomes conductive to short-circuit the supply 1 at terminals 5d, 6c whereupon the voltage of the source diminishes and the switch 7 becomes non-conductive. In other embodiments the terminals 5d, 5e, 12, 20 are connected into the circuit by way of additional resistors, condensers and diodes to ensure short-circuiting of the source 1 should any element of the system become unserviceable thus preventing damage due to undesired explosions of the detonators 2.
