A straight bar hosiery knitting machine having a main cam shaft and a needle bar assembly 26 co-operating with a press edge 16, is characterized by a needle press lever 42 depending from a support shaft 20, a cam lever 64 pivoted on the lever 42 and spring biased to press the lever 64 continuously against a press cam on the said cam-shaft and means, operative upon movement of the lever in a direction outwardly of the cam to establish a solid connection between the levers 42, 64 so that the levers move outwardly together as a unit. The needle bar 26 is pivoted at 28 to support levers 30 secured to a shaft 19 rocked by means of arms 34 which engage cams (not shown) on the shaft 18. The The bar 26 is moyed forward and back in relation to the press edge 16 by a press lever 42 pivoted on a shaft 20. To this end a pin 60 on the lever is engaged by a slot 58 in a handle 54 pivoted to an arm 52 extending from the bar 26. Pivoted to the pin 60 within the checks of lever 42 is the second lever 64 (see also Fig. 3) which carries a follower roller 68 engaging the press cam 80 carried on the shaft 18. Extensions 70, 78 on levers 64, 42 respectively are provided with abutments for biasing springs 82, 84 and a resilient buffer assembly 74 which co-operates with an adjustable stop 76. Stitch regulating mechanism comprises a lever 94 carried on a shaft 22 oscillated by a cam on the shaft 18, a pin 98 engaging an adjustable stop 96 at the end of lever 42 to hold the latter in a predetermined position during thread laying, so that the needles are held for a given size of loop.
