Abstract

963,706. Door locking systems. WILMOT BREEDEN Ltd. Dec. 21, 1961 [Dec. 23, 1960], No. 44248/60. Heading E2A. A locking system for the doors of a motor vehicle comprises a releasable fastening mechanism for each door, a locking member movable between two positions and one of which is a locking position in which it prevents opening of the door by operation of the operating member, and a double acting solenoid having two aligned energizing coils operable to reciprocate an armature member and a key operated lock for at least one door of the vehicle. This lock has an electrical switch operated by the key to complete an electrical circuit on -locking the door. The circuit controls operation of one of the two energizing coils so that, on operating the key to lock the door, the operating members on that door and the other doors cannot be operated to open them. Further circuit means are provided for energizing the other of the two coils of the said solenoids to move the locking members out of the locking portion to enable the doors to be opened by the external operating members. The fastening mechanism, Figs. 1 and 3 on the front door of the vehicle comprises a main shaft 12 mounted on a plate 14, supporting a latch member 10 on one side of the plate 14 and a spring-loaded cam plate 15 on the other. The latch member 10 bears in the closed position, against a keeper 20 mounted on a base 18 supporting a spring-loaded wedge member 21. To close the latch a contactor plate 23 is rotated about its axis 24 e.g. by a push button causing the cam plate 15 to rotate into abutment against a stop 16. To lock the door a key is inserted into a barrel lock 51 to rotate a crank pin 36 which engages in a slot 37 of a flange 34 of a locking lever 31. The lever 31 due to an over-centre spring 37 is urged into a position abutting against an extension 33 of the contactor 23, thus preventing rotation of the cam plate 15 and movement of the latch member 10 out of its closed position. The key is rotated through 90 degrees so that a contact pin 53 engages contacts 55 or 56, which causes a solenoid 40 to be energized and move a pin 39 into locking engagement with a slot 38 in the locking lever 31. The locking mechanism for the rear doors of the vehicle, Fig. 5, is modified in so far that the extension 33 and the key lock are omitted and the pin 41 replaced by a notch 132 engageable by a bell crank 134 to move the lever 131 between the locked and unlocked positions. The solenoid device is operable to lock the latch members in the closed position in both the front and back doors by rotation of a key in the lock of the front door in one direction. The circuit interconnecting the doors is described. The rear doors may be locked from the inside. The doors are unlocked by rotation of the key in an opposite direction.
