963,579. Photographic composing-machines. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. June 26, 1963 [June 29, 1962], No. 25326/63. Heading B6W. Transparent or cut-out characters are positioned on a matrix mask 11, Figs. 2 and 3, at the intersections of two sets 24, 25 of concentric arcs, the mask being mounted in a plate 12 pivoted at B, C, which are the centres of the two sets of arcs. Normally, the central character 23 is aligned with a light source 49, lens 50, shutter 30 operated by a solenoid 20, and movable film 31. For character selection, the pivot B is carried on an arm 27 pivoted on a fixed plate 28 in alignment with the pivot C. A linkage system for moving the pivot B about the pivot C is operated by three solenoids 17, 18, 19 selectively actuated by code control circuits 60. The pivot C is similarly moved by an inverted linkage system operated by three further solenoids. By selective energizing one or more of the six solenoids, any desired character can be brought into the optical axis and photographed when the shutter 30 is moved.
