A photographic type-composing machine comprises a film 59 movable only for line-spacing in a cartridge 60, lenses 53, 54, 55 of different magnification, and a character carrier 1 in the form of a sphere containing a flash lamp 45 subject to closure pulses, the carrier being movable along the line in steps variable according to the lens in use, and being tiltable and rotatable in response to keyboard mechanism to bring a selected character into the projection path, the characters being diapositives held in windows 2 arranged in rows and columns.
