Abstract

963,311. Weighing apparatus. BREARLY CO. July 2, 1962, No. 25304/62. Heading G1W. A weighing scale comprises a base 12, a platform 13 movably above the base on weighing levers 14, 15, a coiled tension spring 19 serving as the weighing spring suspended on the base and connected with the levers 14, 15 to resist downward deflection of the levers as weight is applied to the platform, weight indicating means e.g. a dial 32, means for operating the indicating means including a vertical follower pin 52 fulcrumed at its lower end to the lever 14 to which the lower end of the spring 19 is connected, the pin extending centrally through the spring to move endwise with the spring as it is extended, and a cylindrical guide member 62 carried on the pin intermediate the ends of the spring 19 and maintained in concentric relation thereto by a loose telescoping fit therein so as to keep the pin 52 in its position centrally of the spring. The levers 14, 15 are of sheet metal and are pivoted on supports 16, 16<1> respectively on the base 12. The platform 13 has downwardly projecting legs 18, 18<1> which rest on hangers 17, 17<1> on the levers 14, 15. The weight carried by the lever 15 is transmitted to the lever 14 via a lug 22 and a hanger 21. The end 20 of the lever 14 remote from its support 16 has a slot 54 to receive the lower end of the spring 19. The upper end of the spring 19 is supported by a cupped washer 27 on a tubular screw 25 suspended on a hand nut 29 accessible for manual adjustment through an opening 30 in the platform 13. The end 20 of the lever 14 has a conical depression 66 to receive the lower end of the pin 52, the upper end of which contacts a conical depression 59 in one arm 60 of a bell crank lever 38 pivoted at 40. The bell crank lever 38 is pivotably connected to a rack 35 which meshes with a pinion 34 on a vertical shaft 33 carrying the dial 32. The rack is held in engagement with the pinion 34, and the pin 52 is held between the depressions 59, 66 by the effect of a coil spring 36. The scale is calibrated during manufacture by adjustment of the position of the washer 27 relative to the spring 19, and the zero of the dial may be set by rotation of the hand nut 29. The pin 52 is held in position by the effect of the guide member 62, and by the fact that the pin 52 is a loose sliding fit in the tubular screw 25.
