[Also in Division F1] In a method of improving the efficiency of fuel combustion, a high voltage electric potential is applied to one or more electrodes to create an ionizing field within the combustion zone. A voltage is applied to the electrode 13, connected to the secondary coil 11a of a transformer, the electrode being arranged in the flame of liquid fuel 14. The flame is positively or negatively ionized to assist mixing with air. A direct current may be applied to the electrode. A whirl current of air produced by the A.C. electric or magnetic field of poles 17 and 18 also assists mixing. In another embodiment a further electrode may be arranged in the flue of a furnace which may be supplied with secondary air so that the high temperature exhaust gases are used for heating the charging air or water and so that the emission of smoke is subdued. The method may be used with fuels such as finely ground coal, heavy oil, fibre from pressed blocks impregnated with alcohol or liquid alcohol and in furnaces such as a blast furnace, iron cupola, flat furnace, tempering furnace, ore-roasting furnace, rotary furnace, air pre-heating furnaces or in I.C. engines or gas turbines (see Division F1).
