Abstract
In a method of metallizing the surface of a magnetic ferrite for soldering operations the ferrite is provided with a coating constituted of a vitreous mass which includes a metallic layer on the exterior, both being obtained by fusing in an oxidizing atmosphere on the surface of the ferrite a powder mixture having the following composition: (a) the constituents of a silicate glass; (b) iron oxide; and (c) gold or silver. As exemplified, a mixture having the composition silica 5-15%; sodium carbonate 5-10%; magnetic iron oxide 0.5-1.5% and silver 75-90% was suspended in amyl acetate and ball-milled to give grains of 50 microns size, the resulting powder then being suspended in a mixture of amyl acetate and butyl methacrylate and sprayed on to the surface of the ferrite. The thus coated ferrite was then placed in an oxidizing atmosphere in a furnace at a temperature of about 850-900 DEG C. when the vitreous flux formed, and the silver powder in suspension rose to the surface. After cooling a layer of nickel or copper may be deposited by electrolysis on the silver layer.ALSO:In a method of metallizing the surface of a magnetic ferrite, for soldering operations, the ferrite is provided with a coating constituted of a vitreous mass which includes a metallic layer on the exterior, both being obtained by fusing in an oxidizing atmosphere on the surface of the ferrite a powder mixture having the following composition: (a) the constituents of a silicate glass, e.g. 5-15% silica, and 5-10% sodium carbonate; (b) iron oxide, preferably magnetic iron oxide in the range 0.5-1.5%; and (c) gold or silver, preferably 75-90% of silver. As exemplified, the powder mixture is suspended in amyl acetate-butyl methacrylate and sprayed on to the surface of the ferrite, the latter then being heated in an oxidizing atmosphere at about 850-900 DEG C. when the vitreous flux is formed and the silver powder rises to the surface and fuses. After cooling, a layer of nickel or copper may be deposited by electrolysis on the surface layer of silver.
