963,218. Joint-making packing. COOPERS MECHANICAL JOINTS Ltd. Feb. 23, 1962 [Feb. 23, 1961], No. 6727/61. Heading F2B. A gasket for a specific combination of two components to be joined together, particularly a cylinder head gasket for a specific internalcombustion engine, is made by obtaining the optimum load distribution pattern for the combination, making a die arranged to compress local areas of a sheet of non-fluent material in accordance with the pattern, and wiring the gasket with the die. The optimum load distribution pattern is obtained by the steps of inserting a gasket of compressible non-fluent material of uniform thickness between the components to be jointed; tightening fastening means securing the components together to a predetermined value; removing the gasket and measuring its thickness at points all over its surface; converting the compression set values into pressure values and compiling a " before modification " load distribution pattern; reducing the thickness of the gasket in local areas in accordance with the " before modification " pattern; re-inserting the gasket and repeating the process to obtain a second load distribution pattern after modification; and further repeating the process until the optimum load distribution pattern is obtained. The non-fluent material may be a sheet of asbestos fibres held by a binder and two layers of metal, e.g. copper, may be used therewith to form a metal asbestos gasket.
