Abstract

963,087. Vehicle suspensions. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. June 25, 1963 [Aug. 18, 1962], No. 31784/62. Heading B7D. A suspension for a motor vehicle having a differential gear 3 conventionally connected to the body, and drive shafts 5, comprises a leafspring assembly 1 connected to the vehicle body by means of an eye 2 and shackle 21 and to a hub 8 by means of a bracket 11, the hub 8 having a spindle 16 projecting longitudinally therefrom seating in bearing bushes 12 mounted in the arms of the bracket 11. The bracket 11 is secured by a clamping plate 13, a resilient pad 14 being interposed between the bracket and the spring. The drive shaft 5 is mounted in bearings 24 and 10 in the hub 8 and mounts a wheel 7 by means of a flange 6. A backing plate 23 mounting a brake assembly 27 is secured to a flange 25 of the hub and the wheel assembly comprises a brake drum 9. A telescopic shock absorber is connected between the vehicle body and the bracket 11. Alternatively, the shaft 5 may be non-driven and pivoted for oscillation about a longitudinal axis, the wheel 7 being rotatably mounted on the shaft. In a modification, Figs. 4 and 5, the hub 8 is formed integrally with a spindle 21 projecting from each side and forming a seating for a resilient bush assembly 25 retained in place by a keep plate 30 and seated upon lugs 35, 39 upwardly bent from a plate 33, the assembly being retained in place by U-bolts 41.
