Apparatus for cleaning fibres includes a rotatable feed roll provided with a plurality of rows of two-pointed teeth in axial rows. The feed roll is stated to be non-loading and optimum tooth density is given as 75 to 90 points to the square inch with teeth in the direction of the axis at about 15 points per linear inch. Rows of teeth 15 are staggered and are spaced about # inch apart, spacing between teeth being about 3/64 inch with a tooth height of about # inch. Fibres are received by the feed roll 12 from coacting feed rolls 11, 11a which may be smooth or have roughened surfaces. A combing roll 13 coacts with feed roll 12 to loosen tufts and arrange fibres parallel to one another. This roll 13 is covered with saw-tooth wire and rotates at about one fourth of the peripheral speed of roll 12. From roll 12 the fibres are transferred to a cylinder 14 arranged to rotate with a peripheral speed about 100 to 150 times that of roll 12. Associated with the cylinder 14 are bars 18 against which fibres are buffeted to remove most of the impurities. Attached to the bars 18 are baffles 19 that cause fibres separated from trash to be returned to the teeth of the cylinder 14 from which partially cleaned fibres are doffed on to a suction cage condenser 25 by air currents directed against the cylinder at an angle of 45 degrees. A roll 29 clothed in similar manner to the roll 12 removes the fibres from the condenser 25 and returns them to cylinder 14 for further cleaning, this time in conjunction with bars 51. Again air currents are employed to doff the cylinder 14 and the fibres are collected on a screen 42. In a modified form, air drawn through the condenser 25 is not passed into chamber 34 but into chamber 37.
