Abstract
962,794. Valves. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO. OF CANADA Ltd. July 15, 1960 [July 16, 1959], No. 24742/60. Heading F2V. A rotary valve comprises a housing of stacked plates 22, 24, 26, 28 formed with a cylindrical recess for the rotary plug 18 and with ports arranged in diametrically opposite, interconnected pairs to avoid side thrust on the plug. A pressure conduit 72 communicates with a radial port 50 and, through an arcuate passage 70, with a diametrically opposite radial port 52, the ports 50, 52 and the passage 70 being formed as grooves in the surface of the plate 28. Similarly, exhaust ports 54, 56 are interconnected by vertical bores 74, 76 and an arcuate groove 78 in the plate 24 whilst pairs of motor ports 58, 60 and 62, 64 are interconnected by vertical bores and arcuate grooves 84, 92 in the plate 22. The plug, which is mounted in ball-bearings 32, 34 and has passages 66 to conduct any leakage to an outlet 68, has recesses 42, 44, 46, 48 in its surface which, on angular movement of the plug from the " of" position shown in Fig. 3, connect one pair of motor ports with the pair of pressure ports 50, 52 and the other pair of motor ports with the pair of exhaust ports 54, 56. The plug is connected by a clamp 17 with an electrical actuator 12 which is flexibly mounted on a flat spring 100 to facilitate alignment between the plug and actuator. The ports may be of rectangular cross-section or, as shown, e.g. in Fig. 8, or they may be shaped to produce a force tending to return the valve to its " off " position.
