Abstract
962735 Spectrometers UNICAM INSTRUMENTS Ltd 30 May 1962 [31 May 1961] 19666/61 Heading G2J In a double beam spectrometer a variable attenuator is positioned in each of the two beams and means are provided for operating them in unison so that as the attenuation is increased in one beam it is reduced in the other. The attenuators may be masks 2, 3 movable across the beams with oppositely directed end to end aligned tapered apertures 7, 8 which are of the form v = a antilog 10 bx so that the relationship between displacement and absorbance is linear. Each of the two apertured masks may be supported by a carriage movable along rails 13, 15 extending transversely of the spectrometer beams, the two carriages being connected by a non-extensible cord 22 which is connected to a null balance servosystem and pen 23 recording the balance position O of the attenuators. A separately adjustable attenuator may be included in one of the light beams for initial matching of the two beams of the instrument before introduction of a sample to be investigated.
