Abstract
962,631. Magnetic compositions. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. Nov. 15, 1960 [Dec. 3, 1959], No. 39189/60. Heading H1H. Magnetic particles coated with an insulating composition which includes an alkali metal silicate are compressed into a body which is then impregnated with an alkali metal aluminate and heated to anneal the particles and cure the coating. Prior process.-Preferably the particles have a coating of alkali metal silicate, refractory metal (magnesium) silicate and magnesium hydroxide and are prepared according to the prior process disclosed in U.S.A. Specification 2,105,070. In that process fine particles of Ni Fe alloy or Ni Fe Mo alloy are prepared according to Specification 290,736 and coated with a composition comprising 1 part by weight talc or an aluminium silicate, 0.3-0.4 parts sodium or potassium silicate and 0.06 to 0.08 parts magnesium hydroxide. The coating is applied in stages from aqueous suspensions, followed by drying at 270-300 F. after each stage. In the prior process the insulated particles are pressed into shape under 150,000 to 200,000 1b./sq. in. and heated to anneal the particles and cure the coating. Aluminate treatment.-According to the present invention the body after compression but prior to heating, is impregnated with sodium aluminate by dipping it into a 5-10% aqueous solution of the aluminate for 10 to 60 minutes. Core loss is improved. The insulation weighs 0.5-1.5% of the weight of metal powder. Combined process.-The Specification also contemplates the combination of the aluminate treatment above with the " oil treatment" which forms the subject of Specification 962,632.
