Abstract

In a heat transfer system (see Division F4) utilizing the endothermic dissociation and exothermic combination of a metal and a gas, the following metallic hydrides may be used: those of the alkali and alkaline earth metals, the rare earth metals, the actinide metals, the metals in Group IIIA, IV and VA of the Periodic Table, and above 300 DEG C. palladium. The oxides of silver, mercury, and palladium may be used. The following metals which absorb hydrogen endothermically to form a metallic hydride may also be used: copper, silver, aluminium and the metals in Group VIA (chromium above 300 DEG C. only), VIIA and VIII (except palladium) of the Periodic Table. Alloys or mixtures of metals in a particular group may be used. Specification 961,146 is referred to.
