Abstract

962,218. Abrasive wheels. T. J. MARTIN. April 22, 1963 [Aug. 6, 1962], No. 15759/63. Heading B3D. A self-lubricating, self-dressing abrasive wheel comprises a base wheel of abrasive material defining a wall, said wall having a recess therein; diamond abrasive particles bonded within the recess, the abrasive material of the base wheel being softer than the diamond particles so that the particles adjacent the diamond abrasive layer will abrade at a faster rate than the diamond particles thereof; and a lubricant solid at ambient temperatures and fluid at working temperatures disposed within the base wheel, said lubricant at working temperatures adapted to flow radially outwardly of the base wheel and over the diamond particles under the influence of centrifugal force from the rotating wheel. Diamond particles are bonded in an external circumferential recess 24, Fig. 2, in the wall 14 of a porous granular abrasive body. The end face 28 of the diamond portion may project slightly from the end face 22 of the body. The pores of the body, from the end face down to the level of the lower end of the diamond portion, are filled with lubricating wax e.g. a synthetic wax, e.g. dioctadecoyl diamino diphenyl methane. A lubricating oil such as phenyl methyl siloxane may be disposed in the pores of the body below the wax to provide an additional reservoir of lubricant. The outer surface of the wheel, save for the end faces, may have an impermeable coating. In a modification, Fig. 5, the wax 30 is located in circumferentially spaced openings 34 in the body extending from the end face thereof in proximity to the diamond portion.
