Abstract
Polymers of butadiene are made by polymerizing butadiene in the presence of a catalyst prepared from an alkyl aluminium compound of the formula AlR1R11R111 in which R1 and R11 may be hydrogen or an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, and R111 is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, TiCl4 and/or TiBr4, and iodine monochloride and/or iodine monobromide and/or iodine and/or bromine, or mixtures of iodine and bromine containing more than 30 mols. per cent. iodine. The polymerization, and the preparation of the catalyst is generally effected in a hydrocarbon diluent. The polymers are worked-up by conventional techniques, and stabilizers, antioxidants, paraffinic and napthenic mineral oils, phenol-aldehyde resins, alkyd resins, and lower molecular weight butadiene polymers, may be added at any stage of the working-up process. Exemplified catalysts are-(1) TiCl4, Al-tri-isobutyl, and iodine monobromide, (2) TiCl4, Al-tri-isobutyl, and iodine monochloride, (3) TiCl4, Al-tri-isobutyl, and I2 and Br2, (4) TiBr4, Al-tri-isobutyl, and IBr, (5) TiBr4, Al-tri-isobutyl, and ICl, and (6) TiBr4, Al-tri-isobutyl, and I2.
