A transportable radio apparatus comprises a receiver and a transmitter in a case 10 and provided with cords 11 and 12 respectively, the cords consisting of a plurality of inner conductors, an outer conductive shield, and a plastic covering. A casing 13 contains a microphone 17 connected by inner conductors in the cord 12 to the transmitter and a casing 14 contains a reproducer connected by inner conductors to the receiver. The outer screens act as transmitting and receiving aerials respectively and are electrically a quarter wavelength long at the respective transmitting and receiving frequencies the ends 16, 22 being terminated short of the case 10. The aerials are fed from their remote ends via an inner conductor and lumped reactances consisting of a ferrite-cored coil 18 and capacitor 20 and similar coil 25 and capacitor 24 respectively, these reactances being adjusted to make the effective lengths of the aerials equivalent to a half-wavelength. The housing 10 is designed to be carried in the operator's pocket, and the housings 13, 14 are worn on the chest.
