[Also in Division B5] A machine for extruding and puffing cereal material comprises a bore in a housing, a plate having a solid centre and a plurality of extrusion holes therein arranged around said solid centre mounted on the housing across one end of the bore, screw means for forcing cereal material from the bore through the holes in the plate, a rotatable knife means adjacent to the plate opposite the bore, and means for rotating the knife. The extruder comprises a housing 10, and is fed through the throat 22 by meal from a hopper through a chamber 18, in which the meal is mixed with a known quantity of water from a feed pipe 110. The mix-- ture is propelled by a screw 24 and is extruded through a circle of holes 66 in a heated die-plate 26. The extruded material is cut off into pieces of a desired length by a knife 70 mounted on a rotatable cylinder 72 driven by a variable speed motor 74. The face 100, of the knife 70, behind the cutting edge 106 slopes away from the plate 26 only slightly. The face 102 is at a distinct angle to the said plate. The slope of face 104 is approximately at 45 degrees to the face of the plate 26. The extruder is driven through a V-belt pulley system 16, 17. The pieces may be baked, salted and coated with a cheese preparation.
