Abstract

961,807. Corrugating wire to form springs. NO-SAG SPRING CO. (GREAT BRITAIN) Ltd. Feb. 15, 1963 [Feb. 19, 1962], No. 6206/63. Heading B3E. A spring-forming machine com prises two rows, each consisting of a plurality of longitudinally spacedapart wire-forming jaws, the said rows being transversely spaced from each other with the jaws in one row in transverse alignment with spaces in the other row and vice versa, support means for supporting a wire to be formed in the space between the jaws, transverse moving means for relatively moving the two rows of jaws transversely into longitudinal aligned nesting coplanar relationship to impart an undulating formation to said wire and longitudinal compressing means for compressing the jaws in said aligned nested jaw assembly longitudinally to compress the undulating formation of wire longitudinally. Wires 82 to be formed are placed one above the other in slots 78 at the ends of jaws 32 spaced along a fixed lower rail 19 carried by a plate 10 inclined to the horizontal at an angle of 45 degrees. Fluid pressure rams 34 then move an upper rail 21, carrying spaced jaws 32, towards the jaws on the rail 19 to deflect the wires 82 between all the jaws, pinions 37 engaging racks 38 on the ends of the rail 21 to maintain it parallel to the rail 19. Fluid pressure rams 55 then move the jaws towards the centre of the rails to form the wire about the jaws, as in Fig. 4. The central jaw 39 is fixed to the rail 21 and the other jaws are each slidable on rollers 28 along the rails 19, 21 towards the centre jaw being interconnected by slotted lines 68. The rams 55 are connected to slotted extensions 58 on the end jaws 56, 57 on the rail 21 which extensions engage also the end jaws 41, 45 on the rail 19. An outer portion 60 of the end jaw 57 is pivoted at 63 to an inner portion and is rocked, against a spring 64, by engagement with a cam portion 66 on the end jaw 45 to overbend the end of the wire. After forming, the rams 34, 55 retract slightly and a ram 73 is operated to raise a bar 72 carrying fingers 71 which extend through slots 69 formed in the sides of the jaws, to eject the formed wires. The rams 34, 55 then retract completely.
