A composite sheet is made by feeding a pliable textile fabric carrier sheet 13, e.g. of cotton, along a path in which it is supported, continuously depositing on the carrier a uniform layer 11a of polyvinyl chloride sufficient to permeate the carrier, heating to gel the plastisol and bond it to the carrier, conveying a thin, flexible surface-sheet 12 of polyvinyl chloride to a point above the free surface of the gelled layer, applying the surface sheet to this free surface, before cooling it, compressing the layers together, and cooling the compressed composite sheet. As shown, the plastisol is heated by radiant heaters 21, which may comprise units (shown in broken line) which can be separately raised and lowered, and preferably have an exhaust system (not shown) to carry away any fumes produced. Further heaters may, if desired, be fitted below the belt 18a. The film 12 may have a printed pattern on the side towards the plastisol, and may be embossed by the rollers 26 and 27. The product is cooled by passage over the closed tank 29 in which a cooling fluid, e.g. water, is circulated. The edges are trimmed by blades 33 and the product wound up at 36.
