Wood parquet for floors or walls is made by adhering together pieces 12 or 24 of wood in a desired pattern with the grain running in the direction (shown by arrows 14 or 22) of the greatest dimension of the pieces in an end face of the block so formed and cutting or slicing from the end face panels 10 or 20. The block 13 of Fig. 1 is made by adhering together five pieces 12, cross-cutting them to the shape of rectangular prisms, machining true at least two inner faces and adhering four such prisms together. In Fig. 3, the pieces 24 of triangular cross-section are cut from a board, adhered together to form a rectangular prism and sixteen of these prisms are adhered together to form the block 25. In both forms, the pieces are lengthened by joining them end to end, the joint being effected between faces that lie at an angle to the end face of the block so that the joint line will be inconspicuous on the face of a panel. The panels may be bevelled at their upper edges to make less obvious small differences in the heights of adjacent panels. The adhesive used in making the block is preferably weaker than that used for adhering the panels to a floor or other surface so that individual pieces may shrink apart before becoming detached from the surface; alternatively, the adhesive may be elastic and have a frothing agent added so that an expanded compressible joint is obtained. The inner angle of the triangular pieces may be slightly greater than 90 degrees to allow space for expansion at the centre of each square.
