Abstract

961,479. Change speed epicyclic gearing. FICHTEL & SACHS A.G. June 6, 1962 [June 10, 1961], No. 21963/62. Heading F2D. In a sun, ring and planet change speed gear, the planet gears are asymmetrically disposed round the sun gear. In a three-ratio hub gear a sleeve 3, splined to a driving member 2, is moved axially by a thrust block 17 and chain 39 to provide high gear with teeth 6 on the sleeve engaging teeth 7 in the planet carrier 11; the drive being from sprocket 1 through member 2, sleeve 3, planet carrier 11, planets 12, ring gear 10, a freewheel 14 and a drive ring 36 coupled to the hub shell 15. Middle gear is provided by engagement of the teeth 6 with internal teeth 8 in the ring gear 10 to provide direct drive to the ring gear 10 and thence through the freewheel 14 to the hub-shell 15. Low gear is engaged by extreme rightward movement of the sleeve 3 moving the freewheel 14 axially such that the pawls are disengaged by a control face 41; the drive then being through the sleeve 3, ring gear 10, planets 12, planet carrier 11, back pedal brake member 42 and a second freewheel 19 to the hub-shell 15. By asymmetric spacing of the planet gear spindles 13, it becomes unnecessary to make the sum of the tooth numbers of the sun and ring gears divisible by the number of planet gears. In a second embodiment for a two-speed hub gear, the drive from the sprocket is directly to the planet carrier, and the sliding sleeve couples either the ring gear or the planet carrier through a single freewheel to the hub shell. The drive may be alternatively applied to the ring gear and the freewheel may be on the input side of the system. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 826,892.
