Abstract

961,447. Separating solids. N. L. DAVIS. Jan. 3, 1962, No. 325/62. Heading B2H. Sink and float separation apparatus comprises a vessel in which endless chains 9 having projecting tines 24 are movable to move float material upwards over an inclined grid 36 and in which normally-submerged curved spring bars or fingers 62 adjacent the grid assist the movement of the float material on to the grid. The liquid separating medium 18 in which the bars or fingers 62 are submerged may be water with finely divided magnetite in suspension and the material may be coal from which refuse is to be separated. After the float material, e.g. coal has traversed the grid 36 the liquid medium is rinsed from it through a screen 37 and collected in a collector 39 and a screen 21 and collector 33 perform a similar function for the separated refuse. The material is delivered through a shoot 25 and lowered into the liquid along inclined slide-bars 64. The liquid level is kept at the right height by a discharge vein 19 and liquid is constantly forced into the vessel from the bottom through inlets 26 at an appropriate rate. Separation takes place in the central portion of the vessel by sink-and-float action and the coal, rising to the surface, is moved by the tines 24 towards a discharge roller 38, the lumps being lifted by the spring bars 62 in such a way as to prevent them being crushed between the tines and the grid 36. The refuse, having sunk to the bottom, is carried by the tines towards an outlet 22. Liquid flowing over the weir 19 is received in a sump 27 and forced by a centrifugal pump 31 into a chamber 32 for recirculation through the inlets 26. The sump 27 and the collectors 33, 39 drain through ducts 61, 42, 41 to a recovery sump whence the drained water is pumped to a magnetic separator from which recovered magnetite is returned to the sump 27. Tailings from the magnetic separator are clarified and the clarified water, with fresh make-up water, supplies rinse water to spring heads 35.
