Abstract

961,314. Controlling vehicles. INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER CO. OF GREAT BRITAIN Ltd. July 17, 1961 [Jan. 6, 1961], No. 643/61. Heading B7H. [Also in Division F1] Automatic fuel control means for an I.C. engine supplying power to traction means and to the pressure fluid system of a materialhandling means comprises an irreversible cam member 19, Fig. 2, acting as a stop for the fuel control means 16, pressure-responsive means 26 acted on by the pressure fluid being arranged to move the cam member so that in response to variations of the load due to the handling means, the fuel control means is operable to increase the engine output above the normal maximum applicable for traction purposes. A tractor has a Diesel engine, Fig. 1, which transmits power, by mechanical, electrical or hydraulic transmission to tracks or wheels 3. A shovel bucket 4, is carried by pivoted arms 5 which are actuated by hydraulic rams 6 connected to a valve 7 which receives pressure fluid from an engine-driven pump 10. A fuel injection pump 12 is controlled by a hand lever 13 through link 14 and arm 15 and an extension of the fuel injection rack 16 projects beyond the casing of pump 12. Increased pressure in the hydraulic system is transmitted to displace piston 26 and cam member 19 to present a smaller diameter thereof opposite the extension 16, thus enabling the rack to be operated beyond the normal maximum output position in proportion to the increased power demand of the hydraulic system. The cam member may be of the rotary type operated by linkage. The pressure-responsive means may be a flexible-diaphragm which may co-operate with a carburetter throttle control or a governorregulated fuel control mechanism. The material handling means can include excavators, diggers and loading machines in which the pressure fluid system is oil and/or air-operated.
