Abstract
961,108. Ink-ribbons. W. H. WOLOWITZ. Feb. 7, 1963 [Feb. 8, 1962 (2)], No. 5044/63. Heading B6F. A composite typewriter ink ribbon comprises two strips 18, 20, Fig. 2, secured adhesively in a side by side relationship along their longitudinal edges to an ink-impervious synthetic plastic support strip 24, having an adhesive applied to one surface area 26, whereby the strip 18, which is saturated with ink is only attached to the support strip along its longitudinal edges. The strip 20 may be a camouflage or correction strip made of paper and carrying a transfer coating 22. The strip 20 may also be an inking strip of different colour. To prevent contamination of the ink by the adhesive the inking strip is protected by an ink-impervious layer 27 of synthetic plastic material. In another embodiment (in Fig. 3, not shown) the impervious protective layer may be heat sealed to the inking strip along the outer longitudinal edges. In a further embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown), the, inking strip may be doubled over along its longitudinal medium and then heat-sealed to the protective layer to provide an increased ink supply. The inking strips may be of natural or synthetic woven fibres, fusible fibres being selected where heatsealing of the protective layer is preferred. The longitudinal heat seal also provides an interstrip barrier against migration of saturants from one strip to the other. The method of making the composite ink-ribbons comprises making a pair of ribbons each including a synthetic support 112, 112<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 7, and overlying fabric portions 110, 110<SP>1</SP> superposing said ribbons in face-to-face contact, simultaneously severing the superposed ribbons into two longitudinally extending partial-width ribbons R and B, Fig. 9, and heat-sealing together the margins of the common severed edges. The partial-width ribbons are then flattened out, Fig. 10, to provide a pair of full-width ribbons having a fused ink barrier 128, 130, extending along the medium line, connecting said strips but isolating them against saturant migration. Saturation of the strips with the respective coloured inks may be effected prior to or after superimposing and separating. In another embodiment one of the strips comprises a paper or synthetic plastic support 132, Fig. 11, having a coating 134 of a transferable material such as an error-obliterating or camouflage material and the protective film 112 edge-welded thereto and a second inked or inkable strip 110<SP>1</SP> having a similar protective film layer 112<SP>1</SP>. In a further embodiment (in Fig. 13, not shown) only a narrow, medium strip 112 is applied to the support 132. In a still further embodiment (Fig. 14, not shown), the other strip of the composite ribbon comprises a synthetic plastic base carrying a waxy colour deposit.
