Abstract

A pressure regulator for an hydraulic control system, particularly for application to the reversing gear described in Specification 870,865, to prevent sudden application of the control brakes, comprises a control piston 6 and a larger operating piston 8 with an interposed compression loading spring 7, the piston 6 having a skirt portion 16 controlling the effective area of ports 2 between the inlet 1 and outlet 5, the initial pressure of the control liquid and rate of increase of its pressure during passage through the regulator being adjustable. For this purpose an adjustable needle valve 11 is provided in a passage 10 connecting the inlet 1 with a chamber 12 at the rear of operating piston 8, the rate of movement of which under the reduced pressure of the liquid in chamber 12, to regulate the pressure of the controlled liquid, being governed by the setting of valve 11. The extent of movement of piston 8 to control the initial and maximum working pressures is limited by screwed stop members 13, 14, inward movement of the former increasing the the maximum working pressure and similar movement of the latter increasing the initial pressure.
