Fluidizing mechanism for unloading containers usually mounted on vehicles comprises a strip 11 with gas-distributing ducts 14 extending longitudinally of a container from a discharge port 5 and a lining 1 secured by a gas-tight seal to the container preferably around a horizontal plane. The strip and duct 11, 14 may be hinged at 10 to the port 5 and rest on the lining or be secured to it. The lining has a gas-tight sealed connection to the port 5. The container is filled through hatches 16 and the lining is of sufficient size to be forced into contact with the container sides when full. To unload the port valve is opened and the material discharges by gravity through a hose 6 until it clogs when gas is supplied through a hose 15 first to the strip 11 and subsequently between the container and lining to cause it to billow outwards first to cause material to fall on to the strip 11 and then when latches are released to raise the strip to the inclined position shown in chain lines. The upward movement of the strip 11 is limited by chains 13. Ducts also supply gas to fluidizing portions of the port 5. In modifications differently shaped and connected linings are provided and in one example an additional under lining attached to the container adjacent the strip 11 and at a line spaced therefrom is used to cause billowing before inflation of an upper lining attached to the strip 11 raises it to an inclined position.
