Abstract

The invention comprises the novel compound 2,6-dimethylol tetrahydrofuran. It may be prepared by the hydroformylation of 3,4-dihydro-2-methylol-a -pyran in a solvent with a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen at elevated temperatures and pressures in the presence of a catalyst containing iron, cobalt or nickel. The preferred temperatures for the process are in the range 100 to 600 DEG C. and preferred pressures in the range 50 to 500 atm. The catalyst may be iron, cobalt or nickel or their salts or compounds, the preferred one being dicobalt octacarbonyl. The starting material 3,4-dihydro-2-methylol-a -pyran may be prepared by the hydrogenation of dimer acrolein using copper chromite as catalyst.
