Abstract

The invention comprises mono-(hydroxy methyl) cyclododecane with a boiling point between 90 DEG and 91 DEG C. at 0.2 mm. and di-(hydroxymethyl) cyclododecane with a boiling point between 142 DEG and 144 DEG C. at 0.2 mm. and a process for the production of cyclododecane derivatives wherein a cyclododecatriene is reacted with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of an oxo synthesis catalyst, the aldehydes formed being optionally hydrogenated to alcohols. Catalysts specified include the covalt salts of fatty acids containing at least 6 carbon atoms and dicobalt octacarbonyl. Inert solvents may be employed in the process, e.g. hexane. In examples, the oxonation of cyclododecatriene is carried out in the presence of a cobalt salt of an organic acid and reduced cobalt supported on kieselguhr and the aldehydes produced are hydrogenated in the presence of the same catalysts. Additional hydrogenation is carried out, if necessary, in the presence of Raney nickel. Mono- and di-(hydroxymethyl) cyclododecanes are isolated from the reaction product and a residue, probably containing tri-(hydroxymethyl) compounds is obtained.
