Abstract

Tubes suitable for use in gas chromatography are prepared by coating the inner surface of a glass tube with a suspension of a solid in a liquid, removing the liquid and heating the tube to attach the solid to the inner surface in a porous layer. In examples (a) an alcoholic slurry of bentonite was blown through a tube whereby a coating is left thereon, a dry gas was passed through to effect evaporation and the tube heated to 825 DEG C. to effect sintering of the clay particles together and to the wall of the tube and (b) a slurry of adsorbent particles of size less than 1m was passed through a tube and the tube heated to evaporate the liquid and soften the glass to cause adherence of the particles. Specification 834,390 is referred to.ALSO:Gas chromatography columns are prepared by coating the inner surface of a tube with a suspension of a solid in a liquid, removing the liquid and heating the tube to attach the solid to the inner surface. In examples (a) an alcoholic slurry of bentonite was blown through a glass tube whereby a coating is left thereon, a dry gas was passed through to effect evaporation and the tube heated to 825 DEG C. to effect sintering of the clay particles together and to to the wall of the tube; thereafter an oil diluted with solvent was passed through the tube and air blown therethrough, and (b) a slurry of adsorbent particles of size less than 1m was passed through a tube and the tube heated to evaporate the liquid and soften the glass to cause adherence of the particles: this column is suitable for gas-solid chromatography. Specification 834,390 is referred to.
