Abstract
Polypropylene fibres are coated by exposing them, in contact with oxygen-free carrier gas containing a vaporized vinylidine monomer, to a source of ionizing radiation until a uniform adherent layer of polymerized monomer has been deposited on the fibres, and then removing inadherent polymerized monomer from the coated fibres. Vinylidine monomers specified are vinyl formate, acetate, propionate, butyrate, crotonate and 2-ethylhexoate, ethylene, propylene, styrene, acrylic and methacrylic acids, ethyl, butyl, 2-ethylhexyl, glycidyl and ethylpyridylethyl acrylates, methyl and butyl methacrylates, acrylonitrile, mono-, di- and tri-allylamine, divinyl sulphone, N-vinyl pyrrolidone and vinyl ethoxysilane. The carrier gas may be nitrogen and/or water vapour. As ionizing radiation there may be used gamma-rays from a cobalt-60 source. The examples describe the grafting of vinyl acetate, crotonate, propionate and 2-ethylhexoate and diallylamine on to polypropylene fibres, and the dyeing of the resulting fibres. Specification 960,192 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 843,190 and 850,471.
