Abstract

2,21-Dipyridyl is prepared by contacting pyridine with a Raney nickel catalyst at elevated temperature, the products, which include 2,21-dipyridyl, being removed continuously or intermittently from contact with the catalyst by displacement by a mixture of pyridine and an inert organic solvent. Suitable organic solvents are for example hydrocarbons such as toluene, petroleum fractions and methyl cyclohexane and ethers such as dibutyl ether and dioxane. The 2,21-dipyridyl crystallises out of the pyridine/solvent solution on cooling and can be filtered off. The pyridine/solvent mixture left may be reused in the process with the addition as necessary of pyridine or solvent. Specification 899,013 also is referred to.
