Abstract

Hydrofining catalysts include oxides or sulphides or mixtures thereof of metals of Groups II to VII, preferably of Group VI associated with metals of Group VIII or metals of Group Ib or IIb or their oxides or sulphides and metals salts of Group VII including vanadates, molybdates, tungstates or chromates thereof which are supported on an alumina containing carrier, actuated with HBF4 and dried at 400-800 DEG C. Comparative examples describe the hydrogenation of a synthetic mixture of (1) heptane, benzene, thiophene and pyrrol at atmospheric pressure and 150-350 DEG C., and a pressure of 120 kg/sq.cm.ALSO:In making hydrofining catalysts oxides or sulphides or mixtures thereof of metals of Group II to VII, preferably of Group VI associated with metals of Group VIII or metals of Group IB or IIB or their oxides or sulphides and metal salts of Group VII including vanadates, molybdates, tungstates or chromates thereof are dispersed on an alumina-containing carrier, the whole is activated by contact with fluoboric acid and thereafter is dried between 400 and 800 DEG C. Preferably Co or Ni supported on Al2O3 or SiO2/Al2O3 are used to make the catalysts and activation includes using an aqueous solution of fluoboric acid. Alternatively the catalyst may contain the oxides of Ni and Mo, W or Cr or mixtures thereof supported on Al2O3 or an Al2O3-containing base. Al2O3/MgO is also specified as a catalyst carrier. Comparative examples are given.
