Abstract

<PICT:0959840/C3/1> <PICT:0959840/C3/2> <PICT:0959840/C3/3> <PICT:0959840/C3/4> <PICT:0959840/C3/5> <PICT:0959840/C3/6> Lower aliphatic esters of cellulose are precipitated from solutions thereof in the form of spheroidal granules by extruding a solution of the cellulose ester whose viscosity at the extrusion temperature is 500-20,000 poises through orifices in a solid surface into a stream of an aqueous precipitant for the ester, the stream flowing in a gyratory path across the solid surface. The liquid component of the solution consists of 0-10% by weight of one or more volatile hydrocarbon chlorides, at most 40% by weight of water, and the remainder one or more water-soluble lower aliphatic acids. The cellulose ester may be a cellulose acetate made by a process in which acetic acid alone or acetic acid and a volatile hydrocarbon chloride is employed as a diluent. The cellulose ester may be cellulose propionate or cellulose acetate butyrate. The granules of precipitated cellulose ester formed may be allowed to remain in contact with the precipitant for a time. The used precipitant may be diluted to precipitate residual cellulose ester material dissolved therein after having been separated from the cellulose ester precipitate previously formed. It may then be separated from the second precipitate, reconstituted and recycled to the main precipitation zone. As shown in Figs. 1 to 6, forms of apparatus in which the precipitation may be effected comprise a tubular or annular member 21 for extruding the cellulose ester solution into the stream of precipitant, the member being closed at its lower end 23 and being provided with a number of orifices 24 in its side wall. A tubular member 22 coaxial with and spaced from the member, 21 to form therewith a duct of annular cross-section communicates with a precipitant inlet pipe 25 and is provided with an opening 26 through which the suspension of granular precipitate in the precipitant is discharged. The top 27 of the member 22 is closed. The precipitant inlet pipe 25 is tangentially disposed with respect to the tubular or basin-shaped member 22 so that a gyratory motion is imparted to the stream of precipitant flowing through the duct between the members 21 and 22.
