Abstract

<PICT:0715015/IV (a)/1> Organic derivatives of cellulose are precipitated from solutions thereof by simultaneously injecting the solution and a precipitating agent into a chamber having within it a stationary restriction to flow, the velocity of the moving fluid being such that vigorous mixing results. The restriction may be formed as an orifice plate. The physical characteristics of the precipitate may be altered by varying the temperature of the liquids, the concentration of cellulose derivative and of the precipitating agent and the rate of flow. The solution of cellulose derivative may contain suspended or dissolved colouring matters, pigments or fillers. The process is particularly applicable to the precipitation of cellulose acetate. As shown, the precipitator consists of a tubular vessel A having inlets C for the precipitating agent and D for the cellulose derivative solution, and a common outlet E for precipitate and liquid. Above the inlet pipes is situated an orifice plate B having a central hole. The results of trials in which cellulose acetate in 55 per cent. aqueous acetic acid is precipitated by dilute acetic acid, and cellulose acetate in acetone is precipitated by hot water, are reported. Specifications 338,214, [Class 23], 497,963, 531,955, 588,884 and 646,971 are referred to. The Provisional Specification refers to the precipitation of highly polymeric material in general.ALSO:<PICT:0715015/III/1> Apparatus for precipitating organic derivatives of cellulose from solutions thereof comprises a chamber A into which the precipitating agent and solution are injected through inlets C and D, the chamber being provided with a stationary restriction to flow and the velocity of the moving fluid being such that vigorous mixing results. As shown, the restriction B may take the form of an orifice plate having a central hole. A common outlet E is provided for the precipitate and the liquid. The apparatus is particularly applicable to the precipitation of cellulose acetate (see Group IV(a)). Specifications 338,214, [Class 23], 497,963, 531,955, [both in Group IV], 588,884 and 646,971, [Group IV(a)], are referred to. The Provisional Specification refers to the precipitation of highly polymeric materials in general.
