In a shears means is provided for adjusting the angle of the upper blades 2, 3 relatively to the lower blades 2a, 3a. The longitudinal blade 2 and the transverse blade 3 are mounted on a carrier 1 connected pivotally by rods 4, 5 to pistons 4a, 5a. Between the carrier 1 and columns 25, 30 of the shears are slides 8, 8a to which the carrier is pivoted, the pivot at the right-hand end comprising a dovetail semicircular rib 6a on the carrier engaging in a slot in the slide 8. The axis of the rib coincides with the edge of blade 3. A rack 14 on slide 8a turns a stop-drum 12 on the column 25 and having stops 15 adjustable by a motor (not shown) and arranged to operate switches 16. The cylinders 4b, 5b are controlled by solenoidoperated valves 17, 17a. After setting the drum 12, valve 17 is operated to admit fluid to the top of cylinder 4b and lower the left-hand end of carrier 1. At the predetermined bladeangle, the switches 16 cause valve 17a to admit fluid to the top of cylinder 5b, so that the blade 2 descends at the predetermined blade-angle. In a modification, Fig. 4, the blade 1 is operated by crank-discs 9, 10 and connecting rods driven, through worm-gears 9a, 10a, by electric motors 9c, 10c. The ratio of the lengths of the cranks of discs 10, 9 is 3: 4 and that of the speed of rotation of the discs is 4: 3. Motor 9c alone runs during adjustment of the blade-angle. Motor 10c is then operated and a clutch 11 between the motor-shafts may be closed by the stop-drum.
