Abstract
The dealkylation of C7 or C8 alkyl benzenes is effected in at least one reaction zone containing a chromia-alumina catalyst in the presence of hydrogen in an amount sufficient to maintain a hydrogen to hydrocarbon mol. ratio of at least 4 : 1 throughout the reaction and at a temperature at the exit of each or the reaction zone of 590-660 DEG C., the catalyst containing 15-25% of chromia and having a conversion activity in the dehydrogenation of butane at 593 DEG C., 127 mm. Hg absolute and 1 vol./vol./hr. of at least 2.4. (Conversion activity <FORM:0959609/C3/1> where C is the weight per cent conversion divided by 100). The catalyst base to obtain the necessary conversion activity is obtained by dehydration of hydrous alumina containing at 50% and preferably more than 75% of beta trihydrate form and by adjusting its surface area to 80-300 m.2/g. before impregnation. The dealkylation is preferably effected in a number of reactors containing catalyst in series with intermediate cooling of the reactants, e.g. by injection of cool recycle hydrocarbons, fresh feed or product or by indirect heat exchange, the inlet temperature to each zone being 510-593 DEG C. The total pressure will be 35-105 kg./cm.2 gauge and the hydrogen partial pressure should be at least 24.5 kg./cm.2 gauge at the outlet of the final reactor or at least 28 kg./cm.2 gauge at the inlet. The space velocity is adjusted to obtain a total reaction time of 1-3 minutes and sufficient reactors are used to ensure conversion of at least 50% of the feed, e.g. of toluene to benzene or of C8 hydrocarbons to toluene and/or benzene. The catalyst activity is preferably such that the reaction constant kT is given by <FORM:0959609/C3/2> in which R is the gas constant and T the absolute temperature.ALSO:A chromia-alumina catalyst for use in de-alkylating alkyl aromatic hydrocarbons is prepared by dehydration of a hydrous alumina containing at least 50% and preferably more than 75% of beta trihydrate form and adjusting its surface area by heat treatment, e.g. in steam, to 80-300 m.2/g. before impregnation. The calcined chromia-alumina catalyst has a surface area of 50-150 m.2/g.
