958,793. Traffic density measuring. LABORATORY FOR ELECTRONICS Inc. May 20, 1960 [May 29, 1959], No.17948/60. Heading G1N. In a system for measuring the "traffic density" in a single traffic lane (defined as the number of vehicles per unit length of lane) each vehicle passing a sensing point applies a pulse, from a battery 10, Fig.1, of a duration inversely proportional to the vehicle speed to an integrating capacitor 17 so arranged with respect to a discharge circuit 23, 27 that the potential across it represents the traffic density. This voltage can be displayed on a meter V which may include contacts 51, 52 to provide a signal when a preset density is attained. Where the range of tyre sizes encountered on the lane under test is small a single switch, closed by the tyre of a passing vehicle as shown at 19 in Fig.1, is adequate, but where the range of tyre sizes is large it is more accurate to use two switches (Fig. 2, not shown) in series spaced apart in the direction of traffic flow by 6-12 inches to produce the pulse of duration inversely proportional to the vehicle speed.
