A concentrated photographic liquid developer which contains no free water comprises a mixture of a hydroxyalkylamine and a hydroxyalkylamine sulphur dioxide addition product or sulphite and a photographic developing agent soluble in the said mixture, both the free hydroxyalklamine and that used for the addition product or sulphite being of the formula RÀNÀR 1 R 2 wherein R is a hydroxyalkyl or dihydroxyalkyl group of 1 to 5 carbon atoms and R 1 and R 2 are each hydrogen, an alkyl group of 1 to 3 carbon atoms or a hydroxyalkyl group of 1 or 2 carbon atoms. For use, the concentrate may be diluted with more than 20 times its weight of water. Only sufficient water may be present for the addition product to be in the form of the hydroxyalkylamine sulphite. Hydroxyalkylamines specified are 2-aminoethanol and its N-methyl, N-ethyl, N-npropyl, N-methylol, N; N-dimethyl, N; N-diethyl and N; N-di-n-propyl derivatives, 2- or 3-aminopropanol, 3-diethylamino-1-propanol, 3-methylaminopropanol, 1-dimethylamino-2-propanol, 3-dimethylamino-1, 2-propane-diol, 4-aminobutanol, 4-diethanolaminobutanol, 5-aminopentanol. 5-diethanolamino-2-pentanol, 2-isopropylaminoethanol, 2- amino-α-methyl-1-propanol, diethanolamine, triethanolamine, 5-diethanolaminopentanol, methylolamine, and trimethylolamine. The developing agent may be p-phenylenediamine, N-methyl-p-aminophenol, N-methyl-o-aminophenol, o- or p-aminophenol, hydroquinone and its methyl, chloro and bromo derivatives, a 1-phenyl-3-pyrazolidone, a 1-aryl-3-aminopyrazoline, 2, 4-diaminophenol, glycine, pyrogallol, catechol, reductone or ascorbic acid, or certain mixutres of such developing agents. The developer concentrates also may contain 8- quinolinol or its 5-sulphonic acid, salicylaldoxime, antifoggants such as benzotriazole, methylbenzotriazole, chlorobenzotriazole, bromobenzotriazole, 6-nitrobenzimidazole, 5-nitroindazole, 1-phenyl- 5-mercaptotetrazole, thiobenzanilide and phenosafranin; or sequestering agents such as ethylenediamine tetracetic acid, 1, 3-diamino-2-propanoltetracetic acid and diglycolic acid. The concentrate of Example 6 contains 2-anthraquinone sulphonic acid, that of Examples 10 and 11 contains α-picolinium (3-phenylethyl bromide, that of Example 18 contains imino-ascorbic acid, and that of Example 23 contains m-cresol.
