Abstract

Nickel di-2-ethylhexyl dithiophosphate is prepared by reacting nickelous carbonate or nickel oxide with di-2-ethylhexyldithiophosphoric acid which is the reaction product of phosphorus pentasulphide and 2-ethylhexanol.ALSO:A lubricating composition comprises a major proportion of mineral lubricating oil and minor amounts of an oil-soluble nickel dithiophosphate diester in which each organic group contains from 4 to 20 carbon atoms, and a basic barium mahogany sulphonate formed by neutralizing a mahogany sulphonic acid with at least 1.5 equivalents of a basic barium compound wherein the barium content is from 0.2 to 2.0% and the phosphorus content is from 0.03 to 0.3% by weight of said composition. The mineral oil may be derived from paraffinic, naphthenic, asphaltic, or mixed base crudes, and from mid-continent neutrals or bright stocks. A specific example of a nickel dithiophosphate diester is the nickel salt prepared from di-2-ethylhexyldithiophosphate diester obtained from 2-ethyl hexanol and phosphorus pentasulphide. Alternative alcohols for preparing the acid esters include oxo-alcohols, primary, and secondary alcohols such as 2-methamyl alcohol, 4-methyl pentanol-2, 2-methyl pentanol-1, di-isopropylcarbinol, cyclohexanol, butanol-1, and octadecanol-1, also phenols and alkylated phenols such as di-octyl phenol and tri-isobutyl phenol may be used. One of the compositions of the examples contains sulphurized sperm oil.
