A gauging machine for positioning lengths of rigid material 3 for performing operations e.g. cutting or drilling at specified positions on them comprises rollers 2 which feed the rod 3 against an abutment 5 mounted on a movable carriage 4 and biased against rod 3 by means of a cable 6 connected between the carriage 4 and a drum 6 to which a constant torque is applied. The amount the leading edge of rod 3 extends beyond an operating device, e.g. cutter 9, is related to the length of cable 6 unwound from drum 8 and is shown on an indicator 8A fixed to the drum. When the rod 3 is advanced nearly to the desired position the speed of the feed rollers is reduced and when rod 3 reaches the desired position the drive to the feed rollers 2 is terminated and the rod is clamped in position.
