Abstract
958,460. Differential gear and control. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. Feb. 13, 1963 [May 18, 1962], No. 19318/62. Heading F2D. [Also in Division B7] An hydraulically operated differential lock is released when the steerable wheels are turned by more than a predetermined amount from the straight ahead position (see Division B7) by connecting conduit 27 to an hydraulic reservoir instead of to the outlet 37 of an hydraulic pump. An overriding manual control 41 may release the differential lock by connecting the pump outlet 37 directly with the reservoir. The differential look comprises a piston 29 slidable in a bore in axle casing 43, splined at 47 to extension 46 of the bevel gear on axle shaft 59 and having dogteeth 55 which are engageable with corresponding teeth on coupler 53, which is itself connected by dog teeth to differential carrier 54, to lock the differential. The dog teeth 55 engage the coupler 53 when pressure hydraulic fluid is supplied through conduit 27 to annulus 28 and the piston moves axially against the pressure of spring 50. Release of the hydraulic pressure allows the spring 50 to disengage the dog teeth 55 and hence the differential lock. The hydraulic pressure in conduit 27 is controlled by cam surface 10 of rocker shaft 8 and in the straight ahead position shown in Fig. 1 pressure fluid from pump 36 passes through annuli 34 and 20 of spool control valve 1 and acts on the larger side of differential area head 61 of valve 18 so that pressure fluid conduit 31 is connected to conduit 27 engaging the differential lock. When rocker shaft 8 is rotated and valve spool 9 displaced to the left the upper side of head 61 is connected to the reservoir through annuli 20 and 35 allowing the pressure fluid in conduit 22 acting on the smaller side of head 61 to raise the valve spool and connect conduit 27 through valve 18 with the reservoir so permitting spring 50 to disengage the differential lock.
