Abstract

1522014 Vehicle steering systems CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO 9 Sept 1975 [1 Oct 1974] 37085/75 Heading B7H An earthmoving vehicle has hydraulic circuitry for controlling steering, braking and an implement coupling device. A pump 11 supplies an open centre steering control valve 24 via a flow control and pressure relief valve 13 and output from the steering valve 24 is connected to both a brake control circuit 14 and the implement coupler control circuit 15. The brake control circuit is of the open centre type and is provided with a pressure limiting valve 40. The coupler circuit includes a manually operated valve 34 controlling the locking cylinders 35, 36 of the coupler and a velocity fuse 32 and orifice 33 for limiting the flow rate to the valve. The pump delivers fluid at about 2,500 p.s.i. to the valve 13 where it passes via bores 17, 19 and conduit 22 to the steering valve. Should the flow rate exceed 11 g.p.m. the body defining bores 17, 19 moves against spring 21 and fluid spills back to reservoir. If the pressure rises above 2,500 p.s.i. a relief valve 41 opens and fluid is returned to reservoir via line 42. The pressure relief valve 40 of the brake control circuit opens at about 300 p.s.i. thus allowing the steering and braking circuits to be used simultaneously. Fluid exhausted from the steering cylinders is at about 10-15 p.s.i. if the brake system is inoperative and this pressure is insufficient to operate the coupling cylinders 35, 36. Only after the pressure increase caused by operation of the brakes may the coupler be operated, flow to the coupler valve 34 being stopped above 3 g.p.m. by the velocity fuse 32 being restricted to 2 g.p.m. by the orifice 33.
