Heading G6C. In a weak link device for a thermocouple cable in a nuclear reactor, the sheath is removed from the cable for part of the length within the device, and the parts of the sheath on at least one side of the bared length is housed in a member adapted to move in a fixed casing'enclosing the device, movement of the member being restrained by a deformable member so that the member can only move on the application of a predetermined force which is smaller than that required to break the sheath but greater than that required to break the conductors. In Fig. 1 the cable 2 passes through a casing 1 and is supported by members 3 and 4 which are adapted to slide within the casing. For part of the length within the casing the sheath of the cable is removed and the bared conductors 5 are enclosed within an insulating tube 6. Member 3 is secured by a spring clip 8 which passes through apertures (not shown in Fig. 1) in the casing 1 and engages a recess 7 formed in the member. On the application of a predetermined force the spring clip is released and the force then applied to the bared conductors 5 is sufficient to break them. In an alternative, Fig. 4, the member 3 abuts a plug 9 having a tapered end portion 9a housing on a ledge 10 on the inner surface of the casing 1. The end portion of casing 1 has axial slots 11 formed therein so'that the end of the casing forms a pair of flexible limbs which are pushed apart on the application of sufficient force of plug 9.
